NME Artistic Director

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Artistic Director is the primary point of contact for artistic vision and programming of New Music Edmonton. The incumbent will attend Board of Directors meetings, sit on planning committees, and attend strategic planning sessions that contribute to the artistic vision of the organization.

The Artistic Director position is a 2-year contract, part-time position with a remuneration of $800 per month. Upon the Board of Directors approval, this position is renewable for for a second term through open competition.

Duties and Responsibilities:

ARTISTIC

  • Assist with the development and maintenance of artistic vision for the society
  • Work with the Programming Committee to generate, maintain, and organize calls for submissions for the season’s activities
  • Finalize juried results in collaboration with the Board of Directors
  • Seek and be open to new programming ideas that are brought forward
  • Initiate invitations for submissions and collaborations with artists and arts organizations
  • Suggest additions and/or alterations to proposed programs from artists that better align with New Music Edmonton’s artistic vision and values
  • Create ideas for new and innovative programming that will shape the development of multi-year season and festival planning

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Maintain and foster new and existing relationships with local, national, and international art organizations
  • Contribute monthly to the writing of major grants and source out other project grant opportunities that could assist with funding programming options and collaborations
  • Support outreach events by providing suggestions for initiatives that align with season programming
  • Serve New Music Edmonton Members by providing newsletter updates on season programming and events
  • Connect with all individuals who apply through open calls and provide feedback on submissions when required
  • Liaise with guest artists and New Music Edmonton staff leading up to, during and after concerts
  • Schedule all events and venues, and communicate with artists, Board of Directors, General Manager, and Production team
  • Plan and organize artist and venue contracts with the General Manager
  • Ensure that season programming information and descriptions are accurately provided to the Publicity Committee so that concerts and event details can be promoted promptly and effectively

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in music, with particular expertise in research, composition, and/or performance in new music, contemporary, and/or sonic arts
  • Strong knowledge and active involvement in the Edmonton Arts community and surrounding arts organizations that specialize in contemporary art
  • A minimum of five years of work experience in, including but not limited to, performing, composing, research, programming and/or arts administration with a focus on new music, contemporary, sonic arts.
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations and familiarity with Board of Directors structures and processes
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities in a short amount of time
  • Knowledge of, and practical experience with, open call and jurying processes, season programming, large scale festival planning and execution
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with many individuals, groups, and stakeholders
  • Commitment to uphold the values and artistic vision of New Music Edmonton in all programming decisions, outreach activities and interactions
